Atlanta had been a city of commerce but in recent years it has shifted to become a city of innternational influence and for teh last 30 years it has been among the fastest growing cities in the developed world. The central metropolis within the Southeastern United Stated is the Atlanta Metropolitan Area, the largest metropolitan area in the emerging Piedmont Atlantic MegaRegion megalopolis.

In the Midtown district, a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification was awarded to the district's newest tower, 645 foot tall 1180 Peachtree, which opened in 2006. Also, 68,000 shade trees have been planted all around Atlanta, thanks to a foundation known as Trees Atlanta which was founded in 1985.
